YouTuber Creates Custom PlayStation 5 Tablet [IGN]

DIY Perks uploaded a video outlining not just how the console works but how he created it by thinning down the famously large PS5 hardware into something players could carry around with ease.

Starting with breaking down the console into its various parts, basically only the motherboard could be kept the same. DIY Perks had to scrap the former heat sink, the key piece keeping the console cool, and replace it with two new heat sinks either side of the motherboard. Transferring heat from the processor to these displaced heat sinks required some extra work, of course, achieved with a custom nickel plating of the processor and applying heat pipes.

Looking to keep it cool elsewhere, but with a console fan three times as thick as the new hardware, DIY Perks then applied three high powered laptop fans to the console. When combined with the heat sink technology, the console even runs much quieter than high end laptops emitting less power.

DIY Perks then 3D printed custom casing for the PS5 and even added a subwoofer to implement a sound quality higher than most other handhelds on the market. He then added a kickstand and an OLED screen to show off the PS5’s 4K graphics in full glory.

Once it was all wrapped together and powered with a single, custom cable with a power supply smaller than most laptops’ power banks, the PS5: Tablet Edition was shown running the likes of Astro’s Playroom and Horizon: Forbidden West with no problems whatsoever. DIY Perks even showed the console being put in a backpack and taken to a friend’s to play some local multiplayer.

Sony released its own PlayStation 5 Slim in late 2023 though it still arrives much larger than the one created by DIY Perks. It also released the PlayStation Portal, though this is just a streaming device for the PS5 and doesn’t run the games itself.
