GTA 6 Protagonist Isn’t Played By The Last of Us Star Troy Baker [IGN]

The Last of Us star Troy Baker will not play the male protagonist of Grand Theft Auto 6 despite many fans believing his voice appeared in the GTA 6 trailer.

Speaking to The Movie Dweeb, Baker, who also stars in Far Cry 4, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and more, made clear he’s not behind Jason, one of GTA 6’s two protagonists, but said he appreciates fans thinking he is due to the amount of work and skill required for such a role.

“He says one word”, Baker said of the comparisons between his voice and the GTA 6 character. “I want that guy, whoever it is, to get credit for his work because I’m sure it’s going to be great, and I know many people who worked for [developer] Rockstar — [Red Dead Redemption 2’s] Roger Clark and [Grand Theft Auto 5’s] Ned Luke — and that’s a grind. Those guys pour themselves into those characters and they deserve all the credit for their work. Not me.”

Speculation erupted around practically everything to do with GTA 6 when its first trailer was released in December 2023, including who was behind its dual protagonists. “Jason sounds exactly like Troy Baker,” said Inigo120297 on Reddit. “I’m 99% sure that’s him,” thetruemask said.

“That ‘trust’ said in the trailer by Jason is either the sweet voice of [The Last of Us protagonist] Joel Miller acted by Troy Baker, or someone is doing a pretty spot on impersonation of him,” said KikeElomaa.

Not being able to pin voice actors to their characters is testament of a job done well, however, Baker said. “My truest desire is that people don’t see Troy Baker as Indiana Jones and they don’t even see Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, but they just see Indiana Jones and they see themselves as Indiana Jones,” he said. “That’s when I know that we have done our job.”

The GTA 6 trailer — which reintroduced fans to Rockstar’s take on Miami, Vice City — featured a ton of intricate details (here are 99 things IGN spotted) and plenty of references to wild and wacky real life events too.

While the game was revealed alongside a 2025 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, PC players were left frustrated, though not necessarily surprised, that their platform was left off the list.

They weren’t the ones a little peeved though, as several developers from Rockstar itself took to social media to express their frustration at the trailer leaking early. In fact, the entire industry shared their disappointment that the exciting moment was dampened. Several streamers were also hit with content strikes and takedowns in the wake of the leak.

Regardless, it still surpassed Minecraft to become the second most-watched video game trailer of all time with more than 168 million views in the first three months.
