Nintendo has announced a wholesome new initiative that puts Switch consoles in Japanese senior centres to get people of all ages gaming.

As reported by Siliconera, games such as Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be provided to senior citizens in these housing facilities.

Nintendo kicked off the initiative by testing smaller scale events, but following what it called a “positive response” from the elderly people who participated, decided to expand to 200 senior centres. The publisher said it hopes to pursue further opportunities to bring the Nintendo Switch to more gamers.

The Switch saw Nintendo return to a more traditional gaming experience than those provided by the Nintendo Wii or DS families, which were both known for being particularly accessible. Games like Wii Sports and Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training attracted those not particularly familiar with video games, perhaps making their successors on Switch obvious choices to bring into senior centres.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a more traditional option, but is generally considered one of the best games on Switch and is also its most popular.

In our 9/10 review, IGN said: “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still a gorgeous game and the overhauled Battle mode is a great reason to pick it up.”
