Where you can buy the PS5: Restock updates at Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, Amazon, Target and more – CNET [CNET]

New year, new console. Now in the third month of the PS5‘s reign, it would be nice if major retailers had inventory, but unfortunately that’s not the case. It’s really just a continuation of 2020, a year that wasn’t kind to gamers. Right now the only consoles you can buy are inflated at resellers like eBay and StockX, often multiple times their retail value of $400 or $500.

Sony’s next-generation console launched in the US back on Nov. 12, but inventory has been no match for demand. The PlayStation 5 sold out more or less instantly. In the weeks since, we’ve seen a number of inventory drops at major retailers, but it seems like few people have actually managed to claim a console since ordinary users have had to compete with bots and resellers. 

Twitter might be a good resource to check on restock news, but it’s also an indictment of the poor inventory management at Sony and major retailers. Today, for example, Twitter user @PS5_Restockk alerted gamers that inventory was in stock at Best Buy, only to be flooded with replies that made it clear how frustrating the drop was until it sold out all too quickly. 

As we’ve been saying, it’ll be a while before inventory is easy to find. But we’ll be keeping an eye out for restocks nonetheless and will update this article when it looks like you might be able to score a PS5. 

The PS5 is available in two versions: a $500 model with Blu-ray, and an otherwise identical $400 digital-only version without a disc slot. At this point, people are happy to get their hands on either one, but if you don’t have a library of optical discs — for Blu-ray movies, used games or old PS4 games — we recommend you go with the $400 version.
