The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, which hits PlayStation 5 on January 19, 2024, includes the first in-game confirmation of Ellie’s surname.

As reported by The Gamer, Reddit user tomdurnell spotted the tiny reference on a space suit worn by Ellie in a trailer for the new roguelike mode. The nametag on the suit can just be made out as “E. Williams”.

Ellie’s surname had already been confirmed by the co-president of developer Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, and through design documents and the Japanese game manual. This is the first time it’s actually appeared in a The Last of Us game though, with the developers previously remaining tight-lipped about its characters’ surnames.

IGN’s Twenty Questions – Guess the game!

Welcome to 20 questions. Can you guess the game?

The same happened with Joel, who was only confirmed to have the surname Miller in The Last of Us Part 2, which arrived seven years after the original game.

Ellie’s space suit will be available as a costume in No Return, the aforementioned roguelike mode being added in the remaster. In it, players will fight through waves of enemies across different maps while slowly but surely getting stronger. It’s not a canon entry either, so players can enjoy some creative liberty by playing as the likes of Ellie, Dina, and other main characters with some wild and wacky costumes, including the space suit.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered – No Return Roguelike Mode Screenshots

The Last of Us Part 2: Remastered brings the game to Sony’s current console generation (beyond just through PlayStation 4 backwards compatibility) with various additional features. Alongside the No Return mode it includes three Lost Levels with developer commentary, guitar free play, graphical enhancements, DualSense integration, and more.

Players who own the original game on PS4 can upgrade to the PS5 version for $10, and save files can be imported.
