Want to save up to 40% on your Amazon haul? It could be possible if you have American Express Membership Rewards points.

Typically, we don’t recommend paying for Amazon purchases with credit card reward points since the redemption value is generally lower. But there’s an exception, when you see a promotional link for American Express underneath an Amazon item’s price. Here’s an example:

Amazon website with discount offer

CNET

By using some of your American Express Reward Dollars to pay for the purchase, you can get 30% off a 5th Gen Amazon Echo Dot, up to $30. Note that the offers may vary based on the cardholder. But the key here is using some of your points to pay for the purchase, not all.

Start by clicking on “Activate promotion,” so you can find out if you’re eligible to claim the discount. Add the item to your cart and at checkout, use the minimum number of points required to redeem for the discount.

You’ll need to use your American Express credit card (you can also apply gift cards) to pay for the remainder of the purchase price. The savings will be reflected on the final order checkout page if the items in your order are eligible for the promotion.

You must have an American Express card that earns Reward Dollars and is linked to the Amazon Site through the Shop with Points. You can enroll your card in your Amazon profile within the Payments section’s Shop with Points tab. We’ve seen deals that are available until July 31, but remember that the offers are targeted so yours may vary.

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.
