Netatmo – New Presence and Welcome Cameras

Introduction to Netatmo Security Cameras

Netatmo announced at IFA2017 that it will soon integrate Apple HomeKit capability into its Presence and Welcome security cameras.

The ‘Presence’ Camera

The Netatmo Presence is an outdoor wireless security camera with a built-in 12W, dimmable floodlight. It can be installed by replacing an existing outdoor light as it requires only a power source and wifi connection in order to work.

Some of the key features of the Presence camera include:

  • Live video streaming in full HD (up to 1080p) on mobile devices with a built-in microphone

  • No subscription fee!  Free “Netatmo Security” app available on Google Play or App Store

  • Advanced facial recognition capabilities that tell the difference between people, cars, and animals. Users can use the Netatmo Security app to store information on familiar people, cars, and even animals (i.e. pets) and choose to be alerted only when an unfamiliar face is detected.

  • Records anything within 100-degree field of view and is able to detect people, cars or animals up to 65 ft

  • Storage: Built-in microSD card with optional backup to personal Dropbox folder or personal FTP file server

  • IR Night Vision: See even in the dark of night!

The ‘Welcome’ Camera

The Netatmo Welcome is the indoor counterpart to the Presence. Like the Presence, the Welcome also has facial recognition capabilities. With the help of the Netatmo Security app, the Welcome is able to learn familiar faces. Users are able to customize what they want the camera to record as well as the notifications they want to receive.

Here are the key features of the Welcome camera:

  • Slick design and lightweight: 1.8 x 1.8 x 1.8 inches; 14 oz

  • Ethernet and wifi connection capabilities

  • 130-degree field of view

  • Storage: Built-in microSD card with optional backup to personal Dropbox folder or personal FTP file server

  • IR Night Vision

What is Apple HomeKit?

HomeKit is Apple’s proprietary home-automation platform that allows users to control smart-home devices, such as lights, switches, and thermostats, and make them all work together!  With complete control right from their iOS devices (iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch) running iOS 8.1 or later.

The main benefit of Apple HomeKit is that it is decentralized, whereby users can have as many smart-home devices with HomeKit support as they want!  Also, they can effortlessly link up to each other not only via the HomeKit app but also via Siri (Apple’s voice assistant) and allow full voice control.

Netatmo Security Cameras + Apple HomeKit

Netatmo Security Cameras will transition to HomeKit via a free firmware update. Once the cameras have HomeKit compatibility, users will be able to tell Siri to show them a live stream of the area they want to see (“hey Siri, show me the front door”)  or to tell Siri to turn on, turn off, or modify the floodlight settings (“hey Siri, dim the floodlight”).

In example, Presence Camera users can customize the HomeKit app to enable the floodlight to be turned on when their HomeKit-compatible doorbell rings. Users can also further customize this by setting conditions for the floodlight to be turned on, such as only after dark (say, 7pm) or if an unfamiliar face is detected.

Lastly, another benefit of integrating Netatmo Security Cameras with HomeKit is the strong data encryption that Apple uses to protect the privacy of the users, so that any data or video feed from the security cameras remains intact without ever falling into the wrong hands.

Presence Cameras will be compatible with Apple HomeKit later this Fall, and Welcome Cameras, by the end of 2017.
