Marvel’s Spider-Man: Insomniac May Have Scrapped a Multiplayer Mode [IGN]

Marvel’s Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games appeared to once have plans to include a multiplayer mode within the hit 2018 game.

As reported by PC Gamer, Twitter user @dniwetamp found various mentions of multiplayer within the files of Spider-Man’s recent PC remaster, though it’s unclear at what stage of development this mode was it.

In the tweet (below), the files reference what appears to be a competitive mode where two players, playing as Peter Parker and Miles Morales, would compete to be the “Superior Spider-Man”. What’s called the “winner message” reads either as “Peter Parker is the Superior Spider-Man” or “Miles Morales is the Superior Spider-Man”.

More explicitly, further files listed under a multiplayer menu list Player 1, Player 2, Red Team, Blue Team, Character 1, and Character 2. A cooperative mode is also mentioned, with separate files reading: “If set and in co-op, Character2 will see this text”.

Both the original Spider-Man game and the Miles Morales spin-off are purely single-player experiences despite each featuring the pair of Spider-Men, though it’ll be interesting to see if multiplayer is also mentioned in the files of the semi-sequel when it comes to PC later this year.

A full sequel is also in development at Insomniac and expected to be released in 2023. Some have wondered whether this code could actually be alluding to that game, which will see Peter and Miles collaborate a little more directly, but no official statement has been made about multiplayer in the sequel.

The original game’s PC port released just a few days ago on August 12, meaning further digging into the files will likely continue. The launch has proved successful so far, with Spider-Man becoming the second biggest PlayStation Studios Steam port so far, falling only behind God of War.

In our 8/10 review of the original PS4 version of Spider-Man, IGN said: “Occasionally stuck in a web of familiar open-world trappings, Insomniac’s Spider-Man is still a spectacular adventure.”
