Hulu: 10 of the best films to watch this week – CNET [CNET]

John Cena fans who watch Hulu, this is your week. The wrestler-turned-actor stars in Vacation Friends (2021), playing a wedding crasher who met the bride and groom on vacation and took that as a cue to show up on their special day. This Hulu original film hits screens on Friday. Also starring are Lil Rel Howery, Meredith Hagner and Yvonne Orji.

Arriving on Thursday is Disobedience (2017). This romantic drama stars Rachel Weisz as a woman who returns to London and the strict Orthodox Jewish community where she was raised. She’s back for her father’s funeral after years spent working in New York, estranged from him and ostracized by the community, and the film eventually explains why. Rachel McAdams also stars.

Guess which state Feral State (2021) is set in? If you said Florida, you nailed it. AnnaLynne McCord, Ronnie Gene Blevins and Octavio Pisano star in this tale of a misfit gang of runaways and orphans, plus one dark and charismatic father figure, rampaging through the Sunshine State’s swamps and trailer parks.

Forget zombies and plagues — it’s a monster apocalypse that’s hit Earth in 2020’s Love and Monsters, which lands on Hulu on Thursday. Dylan O’Brien stars as a young survivor making his way through a world where cold-blooded animals have mutated into monsters. “Love And Monsters is a blast, an unassuming, immensely winning monster movie filled with great lo-fi creatures and a likeable cast,” said Empire magazine’s Ian Freer.

Also new this week: Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013), the highest-grossing Tyler Perry film in which Perry himself didn’t star, came to Hulu on Tuesday. Chaos Walking (2021), a sci-fi film starring Tom “Spider-Man” Holland as a young man who lives in a dystopian world without women — until Daisy Ridley crash-lands there — is new as well.

Last week’s arrivals include the psychological horror film Unsane (2018), coming-of-age drama Blast Beat (2020) , dramedy We Broke Up (2021), and boxing drama Jungleland (2019)

Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland has been sweeping awards at film festivals and unsurprisingly won best picture, best director and best actress at the Oscars. Zhao’s a true workhorse, directing, editing and writing this contemplative and fascinating drama about a woman (Frances McDormand) who leaves her home to travel around the American West. Get this: Members of the supporting cast are real-life nomads playing fictionalized versions of themselves. See this extraordinary piece of filmmaking from the director who’ll bring her unique lens to Marvel’s Eternals later this year.
