FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed that he would be open to an adaptation of the studio’s hit 2022 RPG Elden Ring, but only if a “very strong partner” were to come into play.

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example,” explained Miyazaki in an interview with The Guardian. “But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium.”

Elden Ring was designed by FromSoftware to be a profoundly challenging experience, and it is likely that any attempt to translate the mystery-laden fantasy world into another format altogether would prove to be equally difficult to execute. After all, Elden Ring’s history and lore — much like that of most other Miyazaki-directed games — is fractured and obfuscated by intent, with hints as to its true nature often found only in the descriptions of obscure items, or through conversation with NPCs.

This works in a video game, where players are at liberty to explore and seek out answers organically, but could prove difficult to parse in another artistic medium lacking a similar level of agency. That said, Elden Ring has an incredibly rich setting that Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin himself had a hand in creating, so there’s plenty of lore for a determined partner to explore should they gain Miyazaki’s trust, and according to the FromSoftware president, there is interest in doing so.

“So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play,” continued Miyazaki. “We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.” The FromSoftware president didn’t specify exactly what this “interest” entailed, though his example of a potential movie adaptation wouldn’t be far-fetched considering the current enthusiasm surrounding video game films and TV shows, many of which are set to light up our screens in the coming years.
