After a lengthy hiatus and many rumors, Armored Core is back. FromSoftware announced Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon during today’s Game Awards presentation with a brief trailer today, confirming that it will be out sometime in 2023.

The CG trailer shows just what you expect: giant robots wheeling around and fighting one another. Other notable scenes include a burning planet and a mech with a backpack looking out over the horizon.

Little else is known about the sequel save that its release window. Fans will no doubt speculate that FromSoftware will give this one a Soulsborne edge — following on from the success of Elden Ring and other releases — but that’s far from certain.

After all, Armored Core is one of FromSoftware’s oldest and most venerable series, dating all the way back to 1997. It has historically been a multiplayer-focused mecha action game with a heavy emphasis on customization. It last saw action back in 2012, shortly after the release of Dark Souls.

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

Armored Core V, the most recent entry in the series, was an ambitious multiplayer game built around squads of players controlling parts of a large strategic map. It’s currently unknown if Armored Core VI will move in a similar direction.

No release date has been provided outside of a 2023 launch window. You can find all the rest of our Game Awards coverage here.
