Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer FromSoftware has said development on Elden Ring’s highly anticipated expansion Shadow of the Erdtree is “proceeding smoothly”.

The company was asked what the development status of the expansion was during FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa Corporation’s latest financial earnings presentation.

“We are currently working hard on the development of DLC for Elden Ring but we have not announced a release date at this time,” Kadokawa said. It briefly mentioned this in its presentation too, saying “development is proceeding smoothly”.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – New Artwork

Shadow of the Erdtree was announced in March as a major expansion coming to Elden Ring, but FromSoftware hasn’t indicated any sort of release window despite the game approaching its two-year anniversary.

A single piece of concept art was released alongside the announcement but didn’t give much away, just showing a character atop a spectral steed looking towards the horizon that featured a dying Erdtree.

It will likely arrive as the only Elden Ring expansion (outside of a smaller piece of player-versus-player DLC) and be akin to the likes of Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters expansion or Dark Souls 3’s The Ringed City.

Kadokawa also said during the investors’ presentation it was looking to “expand the scope of FromSoftware’s own publishing”, though it’s unclear exactly what this means as of yet. A recruiting drive beginning in late October suggested the developer was going through a major expansion too.

The base version of Elden Ring returned a 10/10 in IGN’s review. “Elden Ring is a massive iteration on what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its relentlessly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our own path,” we said.
