Dungeons & Dragons’ decade-in-the-making One D&D system officially kicks off with the new Player’s Handbook on September 17, 2024, but those attending Gen Con can pick it up six weeks early.

A blog post on D&D Beyond revealed that “limited quantities” of the 2024 Player’s Handbook will be available for sale at Gen Con, North America’s largest tabletop gaming convention, taking place in Indianapolis from August 1 to August 4, 2024.

Purchasing one isn’t as simple as handing over $49.99, however, as fans must first obtain a reservation ticket made available at 7am Eastern on each day of the event, released via the official ticketing system for Gen Con.

Players who obtain a reservation ticket can then visit the Lucas Oil Stadium, Northwest Concourse between 3pm and 6pm on August 1 or between 9am and 12noon the following three days to pick up their copy.

Publisher Wizards of the Coast anticipates selling approximately 750 books a day, “with a little less” on August 1. Only the standard edition of the Player’s Handbook is being sold and not the alternate cover version available exclusively through game stores in the U.S. and Canada.

“To ensure the safety of attendees, we have worked on this plan with Gen Con,” Wizards of the Coast said. “We are using an open space in the stadium to help with line control and provide easy access for accessibility. Using the digital ticketing method ensures that everyone has a fair chance to get a ticket without waiting long hours in a line.”

One D&D, the next generation of Dungeons & Dragons rules following on from 2014’s 5th Edition, won’t launch fully until the Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual arrive on November 12, 2024 and February 18, 2025 respectively. Some new rules have already been revealed, including the ability to drink potions as a Bonus Action.
