Dog Actor Who Played Cain in Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Passed Away [IGN]

The dog actor Einstein, whose motion capture performance was responsible for bringing to life companion Cain from Rockstar Studios’ Red Dead Redemption 2, has passed away.

“Einstein was truly one of a kind. From the moment we met, we formed a deep bond, and it was clear that we were destined for countless adventures together,” wrote Einstein’s owner Jason Barnes in a touching Instagram tribute announcing his friend’s passing. “You possessed an uncanny intelligence, earning you the name Einstein; even if, at times, the name felt like a joke.”

Players are introduced to Cain in Red Dead Redemption 2 soon after the Van der Linde gang sets up camp at Clemens Point, at which point the former stray wanders his way into the motly gathering. In a brief cutscene, Dutch allows John Marston’s son Jack to keep the dog, who later goes missing under mysterious and unpleasant circumstances after the gang moves their camp to Beaver Hollow.

“Though our time together has come to an end, your memory will live on forever. Red Dead Redemption 2 may immortalise you as Cain, but it is the memories we created together that truly preserve your spirit,” continued Barnes. “The lessons you taught me about loyalty, love, and living life to the fullest will never be forgotten.”

Barnes worked as a senior animator at Rockstar Games during Red Dead Redemption 2’s development. While performing, Einstein was required to don a specially-created motion capture suit that allowed the team to record the data needed to bring his digital persona to life. This performance would earn him a spot in the game’s end credits, alongside a handful of fellow animal performers.

“Einstein, my bestest boy, as we bid you farewell today, know that you were cherished, loved, and appreciated beyond measure,” concluded Barnes in his heart-wrenching Instagram tribute. “The void you leave behind is immeasurable, but the imprint you’ve left on our lives will never fade. Rest in peace, knowing that you will forever be remembered as a legend, an adventure companion, and my best friend. Thank you for everything, I love you doody bear.”
