Diablo 4 will be updated “for years to come”, including with both paid cosmetics and full story expansions.

Following the release of new gameplay for Diablo 4 at the Xbox Bethesda Game Showcase, franchise lead Rod Fergusson took to Twitter (below) to answer some fan questions regarding the game.

“To be clear, [Diablo 4] s a full price game built for PC/[PlayStation]/Xbox audiences,” he said. “We are committed to delivering an incredible breadth of content after launch, for years to come, anchored around optional cosmetic items and full story driven expansions.”

It’s unclear how many DLC packs will be released for Diablo 4, nor how frequently they will arrive after the game is launched in 2023, but Fergusson promised that more details would be coming soon.

The previous mainline game, Diablo 3, was released in 2012 and received two story expansions: Reaper of Souls in 2014 and Rise of the Necromancer in 2017. Fans therefore may have to wait years for more Diablo 4 if it follows a similar route but, as mentioned, there’s currently no confirmation if it will.

What developer Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed is that Diablo 4 will be cross-play and cross-platform between Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC. Its fifth and final class, the Necromancer, was also revealed during the Xbox Bethesda Game Showcase.

The franchise has received DLC-related criticism recently for its spin-off title Diablo: Immortal, the endgame of which is essentially unobtainable without spending a ton of real money.
