In Backfirewall_, the Operating System and specific apps function is members of a community, each with their own personalities, and the developers at Naraven Games sat down to explain just how each one fits into this highly unusual adventure.

Introducing the Characters of Backfirewall_

“Hello and welcome, IGN Plus community! We’re Naraven Games, a female-led team from Switzerland, and we’re thrilled to introduce you all to our second game, Backfirewall_. Making use of our movie-making background, a network of contributors from around the world, and plenty of hard work and passion, we’ve created a unique project that we can’t wait for you to experience.”

“Backfirewall_ introduces the player to a world inside a smartphone and the various programs and applications that live there. Filled with tragicomic humor and tech jokes, this first-person adventure game tells the story of these characters’ reaction to an impending Update. The phone’s operating system, OS9, faced with the prospect of being dethroned by a newer, more efficient system, has cooked up a plan to survive. For that, it’ll need the help of the Update Assistant—that’s you.

“Your closest companion is OS9, a.k.a. ‘boss’. Although quickly growing obsolete, OS9 remains in complete denial about the state of affairs. A bug? No, it’s a feature! And honestly, who hasn’t ever made a few mistakes, right? Shocked to learn about the new Update that will replace it, this chatty character is determined to stop the change in the System with your help.”

Naraven said players will also meet a “sassy Photos app that hates everyone,” who feels like a combination of The Devil Wears Prada’s “Miranda Presley” and The Invincibles’ “Edna Mode,” and Alex the Health App, a mysterious app who was labeled “rogue” after it stopped reporting to Diagnostics.

Battery’s Lab, a “dangerously-unstable part of the System where everything is falling apart,” is home to Unzipper, an optimistic app suffering from memory loss after an incident in Wi-Fi, and Social Media I, T, and F run the personality gamut. I is the self-obsessed favorite, T is the all-knowing hedonist, and F is a long-forgotten holdout longing to return to the spotlight (and inspired by Madagascar’s “Melman” and Shrek’s “Donkey”).

“Last but not least,” Naraven said, “we wanted to introduce the Music & Podcast Apps to you. These two only care about being the first to find out the news, getting the most attention, and producing the best radio shows. Music and Podcast also DJ in the Speakers’ nightclub and never leave the booth there. These two are never apart–you could say they’re joined at the hip!”

“There are even more app-characters in the System, and we can’t wait for you to meet everyone. We hope you’ll love them as much as we do.”

Backfirewall_ is available now on Steam, Epic Games Store, Humble Bundle, Xbox, & PlayStation.
