You might have recently heard of something called the ‘internet of things’ (IoT) which is gaining more and more traction each year. In basic terms, it means using the internet to connect devices we wouldn’t normally think of as needing an internet connection. But today there are refrigerators, coffee makers, stoves, ovens, microwaves, vacuums, even mowers that connect to our home network and then can interface with us via apps we install on our smartphones or through a website.
Imagine these scenarios:
A fridge that can automatically make your grocery shopping list FOR you, and that can remind you that you’re out of milk on your way home!
A coffee maker that is sitting at home, waiting to make coffee for you… and you’ve just found out you have to pull an all-niter once you get home. So you pull out your smartphone, open your ‘coffee’ app and instruct it to have a hot pot of coffee ready and waiting for you when you walk through the door!
The possibilities are getting broader and all sorts of tasks we thought were impossible just a few years ago are now fully within reach!
- Refrigerators
- Heating/Cooling systems
- Coffee Makers
- Robotic Vacuums (and even lawn mowers!)
- Lighting Systems
